Biographical Information[edit]

Catcher Carlos Narváez made his major league debut with the New York Yankees during the 2024 season. The Yankees has signed him as an international amateur free agent on July 2, 2015. He hit .231 in 6 games during his first season, and was on the team's taxi squad as they made it all the way to the World Series, although he did not get to play in the postseason. On December 11th that year, he was part of a rare trade between the Yankees and their main rivals, the Boston Red Sox, in return for minor league pitcher Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz. The trade was motivated by the fact that New York already had two young promising catchers in Austin Wells and Ben Rice, making Omar superfluous.

Yankees fans were livid when Narváez not only made the Red Sox's Opening Day roster in 2025 but ended up claiming the starting catching job when incumbent Connor Wong was injured in early April, and he had a strong rookie season. He played 118 games, hitting .241 with 15 homers and 50 RBIs for an OPS+ of 100, but all of this was a bonus because his strong suit was his excellent defensive play. However, as the season went on, it turned out that Rodriguez-Cruz was not the prototypical minor league pitcher but had turned into a top prospect, so it was not clear who would win the trade in the longer run. In any case, both teams made the postseason and were set to face one another in the Wild Card Series.
