Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Eduarniel Núñez made his major league debut with the San Diego Padres in the second game of a doubleheader against the Philadelphia Phillies on July 2, 2025, pitching a third of an inning. He stayed with the team for a week before being sent back to the minors, going 0-0, 3.86 in 4 games in his first taste of the Show.

He was originally signed by the Chicago Cubs as an international amateur free agent on March 15, 2017 and pitched in their system until the end of the 2024 season, reaching AAA that final year but putting up an ERA of 6.85 in 19 games for the Iowa Cubs. He had pitched much better for the AA Tennessee Smokies, going 8-2, 0.98 in 27 games, and it was likely on that basis that the Padres signed him as a minor league free agent on November 6th. He began the 2025 season in AA with the San Antonio Missions, then was promoted to the AAA El Paso Chihuahuas on June 10th. He put up a virgin ERA for El Paso before and after his call-up to San Diego.

On July 31, 2025, he was traded to The Athletics along with SS Leo De Vries and fellow Ps Henry Baez and Braden Nett in return for two established major league pitchers, Mason Miller and JP Sears. Of the four players obtained by the A's, he was the only one with major league experience, although De Vries was considered the #3 prospect in baseball at the time.
