Biographical Information[edit]
Dominic Scheffler was the first minor leaguer born and raised in Switzerland.
Scheffler went to a Japanese high school on an exchange program and had a commitment to Seattle University when the Cincinnati Reds signed him in early 2023, making him the first player born and raised in Switzerland to sign with a MLB organization. [1] The 17-year-old lefty had a fastball timed at a peak of 94 mph at the time. [2] The scouts were Ryan Schurman and Trey Hendricks. [3] He missed that summer due to injury. [4]
He made his pro debut with the 2024 ACL Reds, striking out 42 in 28 1/3 IP but walking 33 and throwing 10 wild pitches; he was 1-2 with a 7.62 ERA. In '25, he was a bit better for the ACL Reds (2-0, 6.15 in 11 G; 9 BB in 26 1/3 IP) but was 0-3 with a 20.86 ERA and 4.50 WHIP in 8 outings for the Daytona Tortugas. He then suited up for Switzerland in the 2025 European Championship. He started on the hill against Israel but allowed a leadoff single to Chase Engelhard then hit Benjamin Rosengard. Jason Agresti hit into a force and Rob Paller drew a walk. Nadav Machlin singled in a pair and a wild pitch made it 3-0. He walked Brett Holtz and Zev Moore on four pitches apiece then plunked Itai Spinoza for a 4-0 game. James Sanders took over and let two inherited runs score but the bullpen allowed 3 runs in 8 1/3 IP; Scheffler took the loss to Justin Alintoff. Only teammate Andrea Girasole and Maurizio Andretta had higher ERAs (both infinite) in the event. [5]
