Richard Bergquist

Biographical Information[edit]

Dick Bergquist is a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Bergquist played both baseball and football at Bates College for two years, then served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He then played baseball and football at UMass, which retired his number 26. He got his Master's degree from the University of Maryland in 1958.

Bergquist was freshman baseball coach at UMass from 1960-1966. He coached the UMass varsity from 1967-1987, going 392-321-5 and setting the school record to wins. He took the school to the 1969 College World Series. He coached Mike Flanagan, Jeff Reardon and Gary DiSarcina at UMass.

Bergquist was head coach of Team USA for the 1975 Intercontinental Cup, when the country won its first Intercontinental Cup. His son Carl Bergquist was on the team. He coached for the US in 1981; they won both the 1981 World Games and 1981 Intercontinental Cup. He was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 1999.
