Biographical Information[edit]

Umpire Dexter Kelley worked his first major league games in 2025, making his debut as a call-up umpire from AAA on May 23rd. He worked a total of 15 major league games that first year. Being from Atlanta, GA, it was fitting that his first game took place at Truist Park. That allowed his wife and son, now living in Fayetteville, GA and numerous other relatives, to be present at the game.

He played baseball at Savannah State University. When his playing career ended, he took advantage of a program by Major League Baseball aimed at developing umpires from minority backgrounds - he is African-American - and attended MLB umpiring camp after working some local high school games. He was successful in that first step and received a scholarship to the Wendelstedt professional umpiring school, which led to his first job in the minors, in the Gulf Coast League. He made his way up the minor league ladder, being first designated to work major league spring training games in 2025, shortly before his call-up. He was the third base umpire at the 2022 Futures Game.
