Biographical Information[edit]
Derrin Ebert had eleven years in the minors, pitched five games in the majors, and was a major league coach in 2018. He also had a role in the movie Moneyball.
Ebert was born in Anaheim, CA but never played in the Los Angeles Angels organization. Starting at age 17, from 1994-2000 he was in the Atlanta Braves organization, and then was with the organizations of the Boston Red Sox, Milwaukee Brewers, Chicago Cubs, Arizona Diamondbacks and Kansas City Royals. His career minor league win-loss record was 85-73. From 1995-1997, his record was 37-22.
His time in the majors was with the Braves in 1999, a team which won 103 games. He was the same age as teammate Andruw Jones.
After retiring from baseball in 2005, Ebert earned an associates of arts degree from Estrella Mountain Community College in 2008 and a bachelor's degree in secondary education (history) from Arizona State University in 2009.
Ebert became a coach in the Cincinnati Reds organization in 2012 and remained with the Reds through the 2020 season. In his only major league coaching experience, Ebert spent 2018 as an additional coach alongside pitching coach Mack Jenkins and bullpen coach Ted Power. However, when Jenkins was fired a few weeks into the season, it was AA pitching coach Danny Darwin who was promoted to take his place, as Darrin remained a non-uniformed coach.
"Even when I was here in Hesperia I was never the best player on the field. I was always an intelligent player. I didn’t have the 95 mile an hour fastball, but I thought myself through the game." - Derrin Ebert, quoted in an article in the Victorville Daily Press, March 28, 2018
