Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Derrick May, son of Dave May and brother of David May Jr., was signed by the Chicago Cubs and scouts Billy Blitzer and Brandy Davis as a 1st round pick in the 1986 amateur draft.

He played ten seasons in the majors, from 1990 to 1999, with the Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers, Houston Astros, Philadelphia Phillies, Montreal Expos and Baltimore Orioles. His three busiest seasons came with the Cubs, from 1992 to 1994, when he appeared in over 100 games each year and hit between .282 and .295. He was a line drive hitter without much power, only reaching double figures in home runs once, in 1993, and 20 doubles once that same season. He was used regularly as a pinch-hitter over his final fuve seasons, including 42 games in the role with Houston in 1996.

Overall, he hit .271 in 797 big league games with 52 homers and 310 RBIs. After his major league career, he played three seasons with the Chiba Lotte Marines in the Pacific League from 2001 to 2003. His first two seasons in Japan were very good, as he hit .282 with 31 homers and 91 RBIs in 2001, and .273 with 23 homers and 90 RBIs in 2002.

In 2016, he was named assistant hitting coach of the St. Louis Cardinals after third-base coach Jose Oquendo underwent knee surgery and had to miss the season, leading to a domino effect of changes in the coaching staff.
