In his second big league campaign, 2010 (he did not play in 2009), Ortiz slugged 11 home runs, becoming a consistent power threat. In his first full year at Triple A, 2015, he hit 17 home runs with 78 RBI for the Rochester Red Wings. The next year, now in the Pittsburgh Pirates system, he had 17 home runs and 57 RBI for the Indianapolis Indians.
He was a Mid-Season All-Star in 2011 and 2013 and a Post-Season All-Star in 2013. However, it took him until 2017 to make his debut with the Pirates. He was called up on April 29th when the Pirates placed David Freese on the disabled list and made his debut the same day when he was used as a defensive replaced for John Jaso in right field in the 7th inning of a 4-0 win over the Miami Marlins. His first stint was that one game only as he was sent down to make room for catcher John Bormann when Francisco Cervelli was hurt.
