Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Corbin Martin had a memorable major league debut pitching for his hometown Houston Astros against the Texas Rangers on May 12, 2019. Pitching in front of friends and family, including his mother on Mothers' Day, he was the beneficiary of a 15-run barrage and won easily, 15-5, as he allowed just 2 runs in 5 1/3 innings, striking out 9 while walking just 1. The Astros had drafted in the 2nd round of the 2017 amateur draft, out of Texas A&M University. He made 5 starts for Houston, going 1-1, 5.59, but was then shut down as he had to undergo Tommy John surgery. Even though he was not slated to return to action before 2021, on July 31st was one of four players sent to the Arizona Diamondbacks to acquire P Zack Greinke; joining him were Seth Beer, J.B. Bukauskas and Josh Rojas.

He only made 5 appearances for Arizona when he returned to the majors in 2021, going 0-3, 10.69 while giving up 19 runs on 23 hits and also walking 14 batters in 16 innings. He pitched only slightly better in AAA with the Reno Aces, going 2-0, 5.93 in 6 starts. In 2022, he made 17 starts for Reno, finishing at 6-7, 6.08. In the majors, he pitched 7 times for Arizona, including 2 starts, and went 0-1, 4.84. In 2023, he suffered a lat injury in spring training and ended up missing the entire season as a result. He then bounced around in 2024, starting the year with Reno but being designated for assignment on April 7th after just two appearances totaling 3 innings. He was picked up by the Milwaukee Brewers who sent him to the Nashville Sounds of the International League. In 7 games there, and 7 innings, he went 0-1, 6.43 and was DFA'ed once again on May 10th. The next team to give him a look were the Baltimore Orioles, and this time it went better. Pitching for the AAA Norfolk Tides, he made 29 appearances in relief and went 1-2, 4.05. Overall, between the three stops, his record was 1-3, 4.78 in 38 games, all in relief, with 41 strikeouts and 34 walks in 43 1 /3 innings.

Corbin started the 2025 season back at Norfolk and continued to pitch unimpressively, going 2-2, 5.29 in his first 29 games with 1 save. However, he did strike out 31 batters in 32 1/3 innings, while getting his walk rate compared to the previous season. He made his return to the majors on July 2nd, pitching 1 1/3 scoreless inning in a loss to the Texas Rangers, then was again designated for assignment a week later, without having appeared in another game, such being the fate of pitchers at the fringe of a team's roster. He opted for free agency, but immediately re-signed with the Orioles, who needed him on the major league roster again. He pitched a scoreless inning on July 18th in a blow-out 11-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, then put up an unusual pitching line in his next pitching appearance on July 21st against the Cleveland Guardians: one across the board. He pitched one inning, gave up one hit (a homer to Bo Naylor), resulting in 1 run (1 earned run too), walked 1 batter, struck out 1, had one hit batsman and even committed one balk. No one had put up such a pitching line since earned runs became an official statistic in 1913, in one of those unusual statistical quirks that pop up now and then, and it was the balk - a relatively rare occurrence triggered by speedy baserunner Steven Kwan having been the beneficiary of the walk and getting him to briefly lose his concentration - that set him apart from the mass.
