Biographical Information[edit]

On April 30, 2026, Chase Shugart was the winner in both ends of a doubleheader in which the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the San Francisco Giants, 3-2 and 6-5 in ten innings, with both wins coming in walk-off fashion. He was the first major league pitcher to win both ends of a doubleheader since Brian Duensing had done so for the 2013 Minnesota Twins, and the first for the Phillies since Terry Adams in 2002.

Shugart was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 12th round of the 2018 amateur draft, out of the University of Texas, and made his major league debut with them in 2024, by which time he was already 27. He did not have a decision in 6 relief outings that year, posting an ERA of 4.15 in 8 2/3 innings. Following the season, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates for minor leaguer Matt McShane. He spent the 2025 season with Pittsburgh, making 35 appearances and going 4-3, 3.40 while pitching 45 innings. He was traded again after that season, heading to Philadelphia in return for another minor leaguer Francisco Loreto.
