Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Chase Lee graduated from the University of Alabama in 2021 with a degree in aerospace engineering. He did not go there to play baseball, and was in fact playing for a club team when he was discovered and added to the varsity squad. He was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 6th round of the 2021 amateur draft and played in their system until the 2024 season, reaching AAA. He was used almost exclusively as a reliever in the minors, as had been the case in college and his highest number of innings pitched in any season was 63 1/3 when he spent the entire 2023 season with the Round Rock Express of the Pacific Coast League.
On July 30, 2024, he was traded to the Detroit Tigers along with fellow minor leaguer Joseph Montalvo in return for major league reliever Andrew Chafin. The deal was intended to strengthen the Rangers for a postseason run, but in an unexpected twist, it was the Tigers who defied the odds and made it further after being sellers at the trading deadline. Chase finished the season with the Toledo Mud Hens of the International League, going 1-3, 3.27 in 17 games; he had been injured during the season's first half, and had only pitched 11 games between Round Rock and the ACL Rangers before the game. In 2025, he started the season at Toledo, where he was 0-1, 6.75 in 6 games before getting the call to Detroit. hHe made his debut on April 22nd, pitching the final 1 2/3 innings of a 2-0 loss to the San Diego Padres; he allowed 2 walks but no hits during his stint on the mound, and struck out one batter. In 32 games for Detroit, he went 4-1, 4.10 with 36 strikeouts in 37 2/3 innings.
Before the 2026 season, he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in return for minor leaguer Johan Simon. He started the year in AAA with the Buffalo Bisons but was called up to Toronto on April 27th when Max Scherzer went on the injured list.
