Biographical Information[edit]
Charlie Hood hit .311/.350/.500 for the Carbondale Pioneers in 1946, and he played 110 games with a .286/.361/.384 batting line in 1947. He improved to .312/.408/.545 with 16 homers for the Vandergrift Pioneers in 1948 (finishing 7th in the Mid-Atlantic League in dingers), then he crushed 14 homers with a .309/.388/.498 batting line in 1949 for the Portland Pilots. He was among the New England League leaders in runs (90, behind Bob Montag and Royce Watson), tied Red Robbins for 3rd in triples (12), tied Wayne Belardi for second in circuit clouts, trailed only George Crowe in RBI and made the top ten in the rate stats as well.
Hood then hit .273/.359/.415 with 10 triples in 135 games for the Utica Blue Sox in 1950 (tying Bud Hutson for 5th in the Eastern league in three-baggers and tying basketball great Nathaniel Clifton for 6th with 86 RBI), and he recorded a .285/.365/.447 bating line with 12 homers in 1951 for the Wilmington Blue Rocks. He was 8th in the Inter-State League with 141 hits, tied Jim Solt for 3rd with 28 doubles, tied for 10th in triples (8), tied Don Taussig and Charlie Neal for 7th in home runs and was 10th in RBI (74).
He then became a soldier of the U.S. Fleet Activities Yokosuka. He signed with the Mainichi Orions in 1953, and he crushed 5 homers with a .247/.320/.462 batting line that season. He became the first player in NPB history to hit a homer in three consecutive innings on September 6, against the Kintetsu Buffaloes. Hood left the team after that season, and he recorded a .216/.315/.325 batting line in 111 games for the Schenectady Blue Jays. He also played 2 games for the Syracuse Chiefs, and his professional career ended after he went 2-for-4 for the Blue Jays in 1956.
