Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Carter Baumler was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 5th and final round of the 2020 amateur draft, out of a high school in Iowa. That draft was curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic and did not feature a lot of high school players being taken, given that scouts had not had much time to see them play before society went into lockdown.

Baumler started his professional career only in 2022, when he made 4 starts and pitched 11 2/3 innings for the Delmarva Shorebirds of the Carolina League. He had missed all of 2021 after undergoing Tommy John surgery in October of 2020, the injury having been detected when he was a participant in the Fall Instructional League at the Orioles' minor league complex. He did not pitch a whole lot more in 2023, as he totaled 17 innings between the FCL Orioles and Delmarva, then added another 10 innings in the Arizona Fall League. The frustrations continued into 2024, when he increased his innings total to 20 1/3, spread out over 10 games between Delmarva and the Aberdeen Iron Birds of the South Atlantic League. He saw a bit more action in 2025, but that season also included a rehabilitation stint in the Florida Complex League as well as time with Aberdeen and with the Chesapeake Baysox of the Eastern League, for a total of 39 2/3 innings over 28 games. He pitched well during that time, with an ERA of 2.04, only 25 hits allowed, and 46 strikeouts.

When the 2025 season, Baumler had spent five full seasons in the Orioles system (not counting 2020), but had accumulated only 88 2/3 innings. One cannot blame the Orioles for not being sure what they had on their hands and leaving him off the 40-man roster. However, that opened the door for him to be taken in the 2025 Rule V Draft. The Pittsburgh Pirates took him with the 5th pick of that draft, only to immediately flip him to the Texas Rangers in return for P Jaiker Garcia. He then impressed enough in spring training to earn a spot of the Rangers' 2026 Opening Day roster and made his debut in their first game, on March 26th, pitching a scoreless inning of relief in a 5-3 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.

He turned out a scholarship offer from Texas Christian University to sign with the Orioles in 2020. His younger brother Trever Baumler, also a pitcher, started at TCU in 2025.
