Biographical Information[edit]

With a full name more suited to a 17th-century Dutch master, pitcher CJ Van Eyk made his major league debut for the Toronto Blue Jays in their first game after the All-Star break in 2026. He had actually been called up before the break, on July 12th, but had not had a chance to make his debut before the pause, waiting until play resumed and the Jays were being drubbed by the Chicago White Sox on July 17th. He was actually one of the rare few positive stories for the team that day, pitching two scoreless innings in relief to finish off a 12-4 loss, then as things go for back-end relievers nowadays, he was sent back to AAA the next day to make room for another rested arm.

He is of Dutch background but was born in Florida, where he went to both high school and college. He was first drafted by the New York Mets in the 19th round of the 2017 amateur draft but chose to go to Florida State University. During his time there, he played for the USA College National Team and played in the 2019 College World Series. In the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, he was drafted by the Blue Jays in the 2nd round of the 2020 amateur draft.

After starting his pro career with the Vancouver Canadians in 2021, he missed all of 2022 due to injury, then got stuck in AA for a whole, pitching part of the season there in 2023, 2024 and 2025, with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. He showed some durability, but his ERAs were high during that spell. Things began to change when he made a successful winter ball excursion to the Mexican Pacific League after the 2025 season, going 2-3, 2.90 in 9 starts for the Aguilas de Mexicali. He then started 2026 with the AAA Buffalo Bisons and was 5-3, 3.79 in 17 games when he first got the call to Toronto.
