Biographical Information[edit]
After a four-year career at Texas Tech University, catcher Braxton Fulford was a 6th-round draft choice by the Colorado Rockies in the 2021 amateur draft. He slugged .590, hit 14 home runs, and drove home 44 runs in 52 games his senior year. He played in both the 2018 and 2019 College World Series.
His professional career commenced with 14 games in the Arizona Complex League, in which he slashed .267/.488/.400 and threw out 43% of potential base thieves. He moved up to A ball in 2022, where he was the Fresno Grizzlies' regular catcher. In 104 games, he slashed .268/.380/.448. He launched 15 home runs and knocked in 53 runs. He also stole 13 bases, and defensively, he nailed 36% of runners trying to steal.
After 15 games in the Arizona Fall League at the end of 2022, he moved up to the class A+ Northwest League for 2023. In late May, he cracked the Rockies' top 30 prospect list when Michael Toglia graduated from the list. Through May 28th, Fulford was slashing .307/.398/.511 with 6 home runs and 8 doubles. He had had two different eight-game hitting streaks, after beginning the season with a six-game hitting streak. On May 30th, he was promoted to the AA Hartford Yard Goats. He hit .219 in 35 games for Hartford, then ended the season in AAA with the Albuquerque Isotopes, where he went 4-for-8 in 3 games. Overall, with four teams, he hit .270/.377/.463 with 10 homers and 34 RBIs in 78 games. While his offense had improved every year in the Rockies organization, they projected him as a defense-first catcher who could potentially be a big-league backup, with a plus arm and good ability to handle a pitching staff.
In 2024, he spent a full season at Hartford, where he hit .242 in 92 games, with 10 homers and 46 RBIs. He then started 2025 in AAA with Albuquerque. He was hitting .295 after 12 games when he got the call to head to Denver. He made his debut with the Rockies on April 16th, starting behind the plate and hitting 8th against the Los Angeles Dodgers. It was not his best game with the bat, as he got to wear the "Golden Sombrero", striking out in all four of his plate appearances in an 8-7 loss.
