Biographical Information[edit]
Braden Shewmake was the second player selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 1st round of the 2019 amateur draft, with the 21st overall pick. Earlier in the round, the Braves had selected Shea Langeliers with a compensation pick. A shortstop, Shewmake was coming off three seasons of batting over .300 at Texas A&M University. His freshman year in 2017 was particularly impressive, as he hit 18 doubles and 11 homers in 64 games, while scoring 47 runs and driving in 69; he also appeared in the 2017 College World Series that year. He never matched any of these four totals in his remaining two seasons with the Aggies, but was still a top performer. During his time in college, he played two season for the USA College National Team.
He began his professional career in 2019 with the Rome Braves of the South Atlantic League, getting a promotion to the Mississippi Braves of the Southern League for the final two weeks of the season. Overall, he hit .300/.371/.425 in 65 games, with 44 runs, 3 homers and 40 RBIs, numbers that would have fit in perfectly with his college numbers - albeit he was playing against a much higher level of competition in the pros. He had to sit out the 2020 season when the minor league were shut down by the Coronavirus pandemic. When he returned in 2021, he played a full season at Mississippi, but fell to .228/.271/.401. His power picked up with 12 homers and 40 RBIs in 83 games, but it was at the cost of his batting average - which had been his greatest skill until then. He moved up to the AAA Gwinnett Stripers in 2022, where he hit .259 in 76 games with 7 homers and 25 RBIs. In 2023, he was back at Gwinnett, where he .234 in 122 games, with 16 homers and 69 RBIs. He made his major league debut in May of that season, but played only 2 games in the Show, going 0 for 4.
On November 16, 2023, he was included in a major league trade, heading to the Chicago White Sox along with four other players, the biggest names among them being Jared Shuster and Michael Soroka, in return for veteran lefty reliever Aaron Bummer. He started the 2024 season in Chicago, where he hit just .125 in 29 games with 3 extra-base hits - two doubles and a homer - then was sent down to the Charlotte Knights of International League in mid-May where he did little better, batting .152 in 10 games. He strained his left ankle on June 1st and missed the remainder of the season, He was then successively claimed off waivers by the Kansas City Royals and New York Yankees.
He spent the 2025 season with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, the Yankees' top affiliate, where he hit .244 in 85 games with 4 homers and 29 RBIs. He played principally at shortstop but the Yankees did not call him up when Anthony Volpe struggled in the Bronx, instead turning to the trade market to acquire José Caballero. He was back with the RailRiders at the start of 2026 and hit .250 in his first 10 games before being traded to the Houston Astros on April 19th in return for minor league P Wilmy Sanchez.
