Biographical Information[edit]
Infielder Ben Williamson made his major league debut with the Seattle Mariners on April 15, 2025, starting at third base and batting 8th against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ballpark. He went 1 for 3 and scored a run in an 8-4 loss, his first career hit coming in his first plate appearance in the 2nd inning, off Nick Lodolo.
He was drafted by the Mariners in the 2nd round of the 2023 amateur draft, out of the College of William and Mary and made his way to the majors quickly. He hit .268 in 12 games after signing with the Mariners in 2023, and in 2024 played 124 games between the High-A Everett AquaSox of the Northwest League and the AA Arkansas Travelers in the Texas League. His slash line was .283/.375/.394, with 4 homers, 66 runs and 64 RBIs. He started the 2025 season in AAA with the Tacoma Rainiers but did not stay there long as after 14 games in which he hit .281, he was called up to Seattle on April 13th, taking the place of Dominic Canzone on the roster. He was considered the top defensive player in the entire Mariners farm system at the time. In 85 games with Seattle, he hit .253 with 1 homer and 21 RBIs, for an OPS+ of 76, a result of a weak OBP (.294) and slugging percentage (.310). The Mariners gave him ample opportunity to claim the starting third base job for himself, as he started 79 games at the hot corner, but they eventually decided to acquire veteran slugger Eugenio Suarez at the trading deadline. Williamson did not appear in the postseason as a result.
On February 2, 2026, the Mariners traded him to the Tampa Bay Rays in return for OF Colton Ledbetter and a Competitive Balance Round B pick in the 2026 amateur draft. Both Ledbetter and the pick were then sent to the St. Louis Cardinals as part of the package to acquire IF/OF Brendan Donovan.
