Biographical Information[edit]
Arlan Barber played for Team USA and in the minors.
He hit .438 and slugged 1.000 as a part-timer for the US when they won Silver in the 1955 Pan American Games. [1] He turned pro that year and batted .250/.377/.328 for the Trois-Rivières Phillies. In 1956, the catcher played for the Keokuk Kernels (.327/.409/.521, 64 RBI in 88 G) and Port Arthur Sea Hawks (.293/.383/.414 in 27 G). Depending on what the qualifications for the batting title were, he was possibly in the top 10 in the Three-I League in average, OBP, slugging and OPS. He played in 1957 for the Reading Indians (.287/.366/.378 in 56 G) and Mobile Bears (.264/.329/.403 in 24 G). As a pro, he had hit .299/.384/.441 with 41 doubles and 132 RBI in 223 games, fielding .979. He later taught for many years at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. [2]
