Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Antwone Kelly pitched for the Netherlands national team before reaching the majors. He is the brother of Jaitone Kelly.
Born in Aruba, Kelly began his professional career as an international amateur free agent with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2021; the scout was Eugene Helder Sr. He was 1-2 with a 4.14 ERA for the DSL Pirates Black that season (striking out over a batter per inning), then he pitched 10 games with a 2.31 ERA for the FCL Pirates in 2022. Before the 2023 season, he was named to the Dutch national team for the 2023 World Baseball Classic. He relieved JC Sulbaran in the 7th inning against Chinese Taipei, and he made all three batters he faced ground out (Kungkuan Giljegiljaw, Chieh-Hsien Chen and Po-Jung Wang). Arij Fransen relieved; of the six Dutch hurlers that day, only Kelly and Sulbaran did not allow runs. That was his only appearance in the entire event. Kelly's ERA was 2.95 in 12 games in the FCL in 2023, and he also pitched 2 games for the Bradenton Marauders. He went 1-6 with a 4.43 ERA for the Marauders in 2024.
He split the 2025 season between the High-A Greensboro Grasshoppers and the AA Altoona Curve, combining to go 3-3, 3.02 in 25 starts. He struck out 116 batters in 107 1/3 innings. He was back with the Netherlands at the 2026 World Baseball Classic where he started one game, against eventual champions Venezuela, giving up 2 runs in 3 innings and being charged with a 6-2 loss against Ranger Suárez. He started the 2026 season in AAA with the Indianapolis Indians of the International League and was 3-4, 4.50 after 13 games when he was called up to Pittsburgh on June 12th. He made his big league debut that same day, pitching the final 2 1/3 innings of an 8-3 loss to the Miami Marlins and giving up 2 runs, both coming on a homer by Liam Hicks. The Pittsburgh bullpen had been terrible over the past month and was needing any help he could provide.
