History, Comments, Contributions[edit]
After |another unsuccessful season in 1928, Braves owner Judge Emil Fuchs appointed himself manager of the 1929 Boston Braves and hired Johnny Evers, who had a reputation as one of the smartest players of the Deadball Era, as his “first lieutenant.” Hank Gowdy was hired as Fuchs's “second assistant.” Fuchs also acquired a third member of the 1914 Miracle Braves by purchasing the contract of 37-year-old shortstop Rabbit Maranville from the St. Louis Cardinals.
The once-proud Braves had finished in the second division every season since 1922. They finished in the cellar in 1929, compiling a 56-98 record, 43 games behind the pennant-winning Chicago Cubs. After the season, Fuchs hired Bill McKechnie to manage the team.
The Braves would finally finished in the first division in 1933.
