Rickey Henderson was an original personality and baseball legend. Not only did he win the AL MVP award in 1990 and 12 stolen base titles, but he was also able to capture two World Series trophies (1989 & 1993). When it comes to talking about ranks of players who have played left field according to WAR, it would be hard to leave Carl Yastrzemski out no matter what metric you use. This three-time batting champ, 1967 AL MVP (and Triple Crown winner), 18-time All-Star and seven-time Gold Glove winner is one of the most revered players to ever wear a jersey. Stan isn’t nicknamed “The Man” for no reason at all. Musial played all around the outfield, but he played more games in left field than center or right. His accolades make him one of the most recognized St. Louis Cardinals of all time as he played his entire career with the organization. He is a three-time NL MVP (1943, 1946, & 1948), 24-time All-Star, seven-time batting champ and three-time World Series champion. Stan capped off an amazing career by being inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1969. Holding a career batting average of .331, Stan ranks eighth on the all-time WAR list for position players.

Babe Ruth and baseball are synonymous with each other. One of the most recognizable names to be connected to the sport, Ruth might not have physically built Yankee Stadium, but it will always be known as the house that Ruth built. The Babe is a seven-time World Series Champion, two-time All-Star, and although he might be known for his bat, he was also an accomplished pitcher winning the 1916 AL Pitching Title. Although the Bambino played about an equal number of games in right field and left field, we are going to count him as a left fielder for this list. Ruth ranks second on the all-time WAR list for position players. If you include his pitching WAR, then the Sultan of Swat is all-time leader in WAR by a healthy margin (182.6).

Not only is Pete Rose the all-time leader in hits (4,256), he is also high on the WAR list when it comes to the greatest left fielders. Yes, Charlie Hustle played all over the diamond, but he spent a good chunk of his days in left field. This 1973 NL MVP and three-time batting champ had a career .303 batting average and was on three World Series winners (1975, 1976, & 1980).

FAQs

Who is the best left fielder in MLB today?

Using WAR as the main criteria to determine the best left fielder, Cody Bellinger, who played multiple positions for the New York Yankees in 2025 but the most as a LF, led all left fielders in WAR (5.0).

However, although he was injured for a large portion of the 2025 season, Yordan Alvarez is probably the strongest player at that position if you look back over the last several seasons. With three straight seasons of a 4.5+ WAR, All-Star nods, and 30+ home runs from 2021 to 2024, it is hard to argue that Yordan isn’t one of the best outfielders in the game when healthy. This big bat has also added 12 homers, 41 RBIs, and a .944 OPS in 60 career postseason games for the Houston Astros.

Who is the greatest MLB left fielder of all time?

With a 162.8 career WAR, the highest of any position player, you could argue Barry Bonds is the greatest MLB first baseman of all time.
