Tallest Players in MLB History

Posted by Andrew Weiser on February 23, 2024

(last updated on November 3, 2025)

Height in baseball can certainly help – think of a first baseman stretching out to make a play or a pitcher using leverage for more speed and power. However, unlike a sport like basketball, it isn’t a requirement for excellence. For example, José Altuve is one of the best infielders of his generation despite being 5’6”.

While the average height in MLB is surely higher than the national average, exceptionally tall players 6’8” and over are very rare. So who is the tallest of the tall? Here is the list of the tallest MLB players ever.

Listed at 6’11” and 290lbs, pitcher Jon Rauch was not only the tallest pitcher in MLB during his playing days, but he is tied for the honor of the tallest MLB player ever. Rauch spent most of his career as a reliever but has 11 career starts to his name. In 2004 while playing for the Montreal Expos, Rauch hit a home run in a game against the Houston Astros. Though this was his only hit of the season, he would make history as the tallest player to hit a home run in the Majors. Rauch retired in 2013 after 11 MLB seasons.

While Rauch enjoyed the honor of being the single tallest player in Major League history for nearly two decades, 6’11” pitcher Sean Hjelle made his debut for the San Francisco Giants on May 6, 2022, the day before his 25th birthday. Despite his physical stature and claim as the tallest pitcher in MLB currently, Hjelle has had limited success in his three seasons in the Majors. He has pitched in 93 games, posting a 7-8 record and a 5.11 ERA.

Standing at 6’10, pitcher Randy Johnson is the tallest player in the Hall of Fame. Johnson’s vicious slider allowed The Big Unit to pitch in the Majors for a lengthy 22-season career. Johnson is a five-time Cy Young winner including an incredible four consecutive with the Arizona Diamondbacks (’99 to ’02). Though he played for six franchises in his career, he is probably best remembered for his dominant eight seasons in Arizona, where he helped the team win their first World Series title, for which he was named a co-World Series MVP with Curt Schilling.

Appearing in 49 games across three seasons with the New York Mets, 6’10” pitcher Eric Hillman was tied with Randy Johnson for the tallest player in baseball when he made his MLB debut in 1992. Unfortunately, Hillman’s height did not afford him the same type of success that Johnson saw. He finished his MLB career with a 4-14 record and a 4.85 ERA before playing a few seasons in Japan.

Pitcher Chris Young became the fourth player 6’10” or taller when he made his Major League debut for his hometown Texas Rangers in 2004. Young’s best individual season came in 2007 with the San Diego Padres. Named an All-Star, he posted a 3.12 ERA and struck out 167 batters during the season. In the postseason, he had a 2-0 record and 2.01 ERA, and he won a World Series title with the 2015 Kansas City Royals. Young was the tallest player in MLB the year he retired in 2017.

6’10” righthander Aaron Slegers appeared in 49 games across five seasons for the Minnesota Twins, Tampa Bay Rays and Los Angeles Angels. Slegers’ height was the most remarkable part of his career, as he last pitched at the Major League level in 2021 and had a 3-4 career record with a 5.46 ERA. Slegers formally announced his retirement in January 2023, citing an ongoing shoulder injury.

At 6’9” 240lbs, lefthander Mark Hendrickson was built more like LeBron James than your typical Major Leaguer. Perhaps then, it may be unsurprising that baseball was a second career for Hendrickson after a few years in the NBA. When he made his debut in August 2002, he not only became one of the tallest MLB players ever, but he joined the rare fraternity of 13 athletes to play in both the NBA and MLB. Hendrickson made the smart choice in choosing baseball over hoops: he pitched in the Majors for 10 years, well into his 30s.

Acquired by the Los Angeles Dodgers prior to the 2024 season, starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow is tied with Chris Martin as the second-tallest player in baseball at 6’8”. Glasnow struggled with the Pittsburgh Pirates early in his career but developed into a formidable starting pitcher with the Tampa Bay Rays. Through the 2025 season, Glasnow owns a 43-36 record and a 3.74 ERA. He had limited success in the postseason with the Rays, posting a 2-6 record in seven series, and was injured in 2024 for the Dodgers’ championship run. However, he pitched well for the Dodgers in their 2025 postseason march to the World Series title.
