Yang Yang made his debut for the Chinese national team in the Olympics.
Yang was the backup to Wei Wang in the 2008 Olympics, playing for the host China club. He replaced Wang in the August 18 game against Team USA after Matt LaPorta injured Wang in a home plate collision. In Yang's first full inning behind the plate, he was the victim of a head-on collision with Nate Schierholtz. It was one of several rough incidents in the game. Down 9-0 in the 9th, Yang gave China its only run with a long solo shot off of Blaine Neal. It was his only hit in 6 at-bats in the Olympics. Opponents stole bases 4 times in 4 tries against him.
Yang backed up Zhenwang Zhang at catcher in the 2009 World Baseball Classic. He got two plate appearances, singling against Kyuji Fujikawa as a pinch-hitter in a loss to Japan and striking out as a pinch-hitter against Suk-min Yoon in a loss to South Korea.
