Biographical Information[edit]
Win Kellum played for three different teams in three seasons in the major leagues. His major league debut in 1901 was as the opening day starting pitcher for the Boston Americans, notable in that Kellum bumped Americans' ace Cy Young to the next game. Kellum went the distance in that game and in his next outing, allowing 10 and 11 runs in those two games; only two other modern era pitchers have allowed 10 or more runs in each of two complete games to start their careers, neither of whom got to make a third start.
Kellum's big year was with the Cincinnati Reds in 1904 when he went 15-10 with 2 saves. On April 19th that season, Kellum went 3 for 4 batting, including two doubles and a triple, to become one of 24 pitchers with three or more extra-base hits in a game (Babe Ruth leads with three such games). On May 20th the following season, Kellum pitched a 14 inning CG for the St. Louis Cardinals to defeat the Boston Beaneaters by a 3 - 2 score. Less than a month later, he was sold to the Toledo Mud Hens and would spend the rest of his professional career in the minor leagues.
Kellum had a long minor league career from 1895-1909, spending eight seasons with the Indianapolis Indians. In 1902 he went 25-10 with Indy. He umpired one National League game in 1905.
