Biographical Information[edit]
Infielder William "Willie" or "Kid" Mahling played in the minor leagues from 1903 to 1911, mostly in the Eastern League, one of the top circuits of the period. He hit .257 in over 1,000 career games. He was voted most popular player in the league in 1909, and later played in semi-pro leagues around Newark, NJ. His career was still on the ascent when he hung up his spikes, finishing his career with the Class A Columbus Senators of the American Association.
Ancestry lists his birth as January, 1878 [citation needed]. According to obituaries printed at the time of his passing, Mahling was listed as 37 [1], passed away at his home in Newark, New Jersey [2] [3] of either heart disease, being overcome by the heat, or a combination of the two.
