Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Will Robertson was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 4th round of the 2019 amateur draft out of Creighton University. It was obviously a good match, since Creighton's teams are called the Bluejays (in only one word, though), but it took Will a while to make his way to the majors. Like all of the players of his generation, the COVID-19 pandemic cost him a year of development in 2020, but he started making waved in 2022 when he hit 15 homers in 96 games, playing mostly for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats of the AA Eastern League, although he still needed to work on making contact, as he hit just .227 with 102 strikeouts. He improved on both counts in 2023, hitting .245 in 103 games for New Hampshire, with 19 homers and 57 RBIs.
2024 turned out to be a year of opportunity for a lot of young players in the Blue Jays' organization, as the major league team's struggles, a rash of injuries, and then a series of trades during the year opened up playing time for a number of youngsters with the big league club. Unfortunately, Will was unable to take advantage of that wave, as in his first year in AAA with the Buffalo Bisons, he hit just .226 in 119 games, and was an everyday player the entire season while most of his teammates got at least a look with the big club. He did hit 19 homers and drove in 71 runs, but was passed up by other players with a similar profile, such as OF/3B Addison Barger or OF Alan Roden, the latter, a former teammate at Creighton, managing to claim a spot on the Jays' Opening Day roster in 2025. Will went back to Buffalo and hit much better in his second go-round there, as after 52 games he was batting .288 with 12 homers and 35 RBIs. On June 11th, he was selected by the major league team and added to the 26-man roster when Nathan Lukes was placed on the concussion list. It took a few days for him to make his big league debut, which came on June 15th as the starting rightfielder and #8 hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies. He went 1 for 4 with an RBI in an 11-4 loss.
