Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Wikelman González was one of four players acquired by the Chicago White Sox from the Boston Red Sox on December 11, 2024 in the blockbuster trade for Garrett Crochet, along with Chase Meidroth, Braden Montgomery and Kyle Teel. At the time, none of the four had played in the majors yet, but they would start to do so in short order, as by the time Wikelman made his debut on June 20, 2025, pitching two innings of relief against the Toronto Blue Jays, Meidroth and Teel were already established big leaguers and in fact both were in Chicago's starting line-up that day.
The Red Sox had signed González as an international amateur free agent from Venezuela on July 2, 2018, and he pitched in their system from 2019 to 2024, losing the 2020 season to the COVID-19 pandemic. He reached AA in 2023, going 9-4, 3.96 in 25 starts between two teams, then spent the entire 2024 season with the Portland Sea Dogs, with a record of 4-3, 4.73 in 24 games (19 starts) and 92 strikeouts in 83 2/3 innings. In 2025, he started the season in AA with the Birmingham Barons, then was promoted to AAA for the first time with the Charlotte Knights of the International League on April 29th. At the time of his call-up, he had made 4 starts in 16 appearances, with a record of 5-2, 3.50.
He was named after major league catcher Wiklenman González, who is from his home town of Maracay, Aragua.
