Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Wade Meckler was completely under the radar when the San Francisco Giants took him in the 8th round of the 2022 amateur draft out of Oregon State University, but he was still one of the first players taken in that draft to make it to the majors, needing barely a year and a month to do so.
He was coming off a great junior season at Oregon State, batting .347 in 66 games with 81 runs scored, and had hit .303 in 49 games as a sophomore in 2021. That was after not playing a single game in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and getting just one hit in 20 games as a freshman in 2019. Just getting into such a large program was a big upset for him, as when he started his high school career, he measured barely 4' 10" (he would grow by a full foot before graduation), and made the Oregon State team as a walk-on. As soon as he signed with the Giants, for a bonus of just under $100,00, he began to destroy minor league pitching, combining to hit .367/.500/.544 in 23 games between the ACL Giants Black and San Jose Missions in 2022. In 2023, he started the season in the Northwest League with the Eugene Emeralds and hit .456 in 20 games to earn a first promotion, to the Richmond Flying Squirrels of the Eastern League. Double-A itching wasn't any more challenging, as he batted .336 in 39 games, and in his first 10 games with the Sacramento River Cats of the Pacific Coast League, he hit .400 to earn a final promotion, this one to the big league team. His combined .379 average and .473 on-base percentage at the time led all qualified minor league players,
In his major league debut on August 14, 2023, he started in centerfield and batted second for the Giants against the Tampa Bay Rays. While he was stymied by Tyler Glasnow, who allowed just 3 hits in 6 innings, going 0 for 3, he did draw a walk in the game, a 10-2 loss. He was the fourth player from the 2022 draft to make it to the majors, with the three others being members of the Los Angeles Angels.
