Vern Handrahan was born on Prince Edward Island, Canada, and did not play organized baseball until he was 15. Playing in semi-pro ball in 1958, he caught the attention of scouts and he was signed by the Milwaukee Braves in 1959.
He pitched in the minors from 1959 to 1970, was in the majors in 1964 and 1966 with the Kansas City Athletics, and also played winter ball in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. In a minor league game in 1962 he struck out 19. In 1967, with the Birmingham A's he came close to pitching a perfect game. He coached for Team Canada in the 1975 Intercontinental Cup.
