Biographical Information[edit]
Third baseman Tyler Freeman was a second round selection in the 2017 amateur draft by the Cleveland Indians. His younger brother, Cody Freeman, was drafted in the 4th round of the 2019 amateur draft by the Texas Rangers and reached the majors in 2025. The two were teammates at Etiwanda High School, where Tyler led all high school players in California by batting .526 as a senior in 2017. He gave up a commitment to attend Texas Christian University in order to sign with Cleveland.
He reached the majors with the Cleveland, with the team now called the Cleveland Guardians, towards the end of the 2022 season. he hit .247 in 24 games that season with no homers and 3 RBIs. He appeared at three different defensive positions - third base, shortstop and second base. In 2023, he appeared in 64 games and hit .242 with 4 homers and 18 RBIs. His OPS+ was 82. Once again, his main value was his ability to play multiple positions, with Tyler being in 10 or more games at all three of the positions he had played the year before. In 2024, he increased his playing time to 118 games, but his offensive contribution remained limited, with just a .209 average, 7 homers and 32 RBIs. His OPS+ was 79. One major change was that his main position on defense was centerfield, where he appeared in 97 games, more than any other player on the team. However, by the time the season ended, he had lost his starting job to trading deadline acquisition Lane Thomas. In fact, while the Guardians made it to the postseason in both 2022 and 2024, he did not appear in any postseason games during these two seasons.
On March 22, 2025, as spring training was winding down, he was traded to the Colorado Rockies in return for another major leaguer, OF Nolan Jones.
