Biographical Information

Ty Hawkins coached in the minors for over two decades.

Undrafted out of college, Hawkins signed with the Chicago Cubs. He split 1991, his lone pro season, between the Erie Sailors (.212/.288/.318) and South Bend Silver Hawks (.217/.312/.276). Overall, he fielded .897 in 51 outfield games. He later coached at Vanderbilt University (starting in 1993) and the University of Illinois (years unknown) before becoming a minor league hitting coach.

Hawkins spent the first 21 years coaching in affiliated ball with the New York Yankees organization. He coached the GCL Yankees in 1999, the Greensboro Bats in 2000, the GCL Yankees again in 2001 prior to a repeat performance with Greensboro in 2002. Hawkins coached the Battle Creek Yankees in 2003, the Tampa Yankees in 2004, and the Trenton Thunder in 2005. He spent the next decade (2006-2015) coaching the Staten Island Yankees. During this period he also served as head coach of the Point Pleasant Beach High School Gulls in 2011-2012. It is unclear what role Hawkins had with the Yankees in 2016. Some sources indicate he coached hitters for the GCL Yankees East and others refer to him as a roving hitting coach. It is possible he fulfilled both roles. In 2017, he started the year coaching the GCL Yankees West squad. However, on June 22nd, it was announced that he was swapping positions with Ken Joyce. Hawkins moved to the Charleston RiverDogs and Joyce moved to the GCL Yankees West. Hawkins returned to the Trenton Thunder in 2018 and began 2019 in that role. Around the end of June he moved to the GCL Yankees East for the remainder of the season. This proved to be his last year affiliated with the Yankees organization.

The Miami Marlins hired Hawkins as a hitting coach for the Jupiter Hammerheads in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19. From 2021-2024 he did coach the Hammerheads. Hawkins left the Marlins after the 2024 season amid an overhaul of the Marlins player development system.

In 2025 Hawkins left affiliated ball and was the lead hitting coach for the NJ Elite training facility.
