Biographical Information

Pitcher Todd Etler played professionally from 1992 to 2005. Though he peaked briefly at Triple-A, he never ascended to the majors.

He was taken by the Cincinnati Reds in the 3rd round of the 1992 amateur draft, one pick ahead of pitcher Brian Powell. While in the Reds system, he had a couple seasons of particular note. In 1993, his second campaign, he was 8-1 with a 2.71 ERA in 15 starts for the Billings Mustangs. He tied Cory Lidle and Fabian Salmon for the Pioneer League-lead in victories. He tied multiple pitchers for second in starts, behind Lidle's 16. In 1998, as a reliever, he went 6-0 with a 1.92 ERA in 46 appearances for the Chattanooga Lookouts. One season of ignominy was 1994, when he allowed 25 home runs in just 106 innings for the Winston-Salem Spirits; he was second in the Carolina League in homers allowed, behind Jamie Arnold's 26 (the season wasn't a total wash, as he won 9 games on the back of a solid performance with the Charleston Wheelers). He reached Triple-A for the first and only time in 1999, going 2-1 with a 6.39 ERA in 26 relief appearances for the Indianapolis Indians. That was his final season in the Reds system. Overall, he went 41-42 with a 3.95 ERA in 244 games (75 starts) overall; in 733 innings, he allowed 738 hits and 247 walks (1.344 WHIP), while striking out 501 batters.

After not playing professionally in 2000 or 2001, he returned in 2002 to become an independent league traveler. He played at that level in 2002, 2003 and 2005, spending time in the Atlantic League, Western League, Canadian Baseball League, Northeast League and Canadian-American Association. He was 12-7 with a 4.28 ERA in 42 games (25 starts) overall. In 157 2/3 innings, he allowed 166 hits and 52 walks (1.383 WHIP), while striking out 127 batters.

In total, at all levels, he went 53-49 with a 4.01 ERA in 286 games (100 starts). In 890 2/3 innings, he allowed 904 hits and 299 walks (1.351 WHIP), while striking out 628 batters.

He was the New Haven County Cutters pitching coach in the mid-2000s.
