Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Teddy Rose played in the minor leagues from 1996 to 2002. Though he spent part or all of three seasons at Triple-A, he never ascended to the majors.
He was initially taken by the Texas Rangers in the 36th round of the 1992 amateur draft, a few picks after infielder Lou Merloni and in the same round as outfielder Raul Ibanez, but opted not to sign. He did sign after being taken by the Cincinnati Reds in the 14th round of the 1996 amateur draft, a few picks ahead of pitcher Delvin James.
After a down initial campaign, Rose went 11-6 with a 2.51 ERA in 38 games (13 starts) for the Charleston AlleyCats in 1997, striking out 132 in 129 1/3 innings. He went 11-10 for the Chattanooga Lookouts in 1998, though his ERA rose to 4.60, with his 29 starts tying Courtney Duncan and Micah Bowie for the Southern League lead. After a 2-0, 4.74 campaign in 1999, Rose—now a reliever—went 4-2 with 8 saves, 51 Ks and a 1.10 mark in 41 innings for Chattanooga in 2000. He reached Triple-A for the first time that year, going 2-2 with a 4.97 ERA in 23 games for the Louisville RiverBats. Between them, he was 6-4 with a 2.96 ERA in 54 games. He left the Reds system for the Montreal Expos chain in 2001, having been taken by them in the 2000 Rule V Draft, and then played in the Cleveland Indians chain in 2002.
Overall, Rose went 44-37 with a 3.94 ERA in 194 games (79 starts). In 632 2/3 innings, he allowed 630 hits and 198 walks (1.309 WHIP), while striking out 532 batters. At Triple-A, he was 11-12 with a 4.06 ERA in 65 games (20 starts). He was a good hitter, batting .286/.294/.531 with 2 homers, 12 RBI and 14 hits in 49 at-bats; in 1998, he hit .300 (9-for-30) and in 2000, he hit .333 (3-for-9).
