Biographical Information[edit]

Takayuki Iwai played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 13 years.

Iwai was drafted by the Taiyo Whales in the 2nd round of the 1975 NPB draft, but he never had more than 60 at-bats a season for the Whales as they already had Daisuke Yamashita. He was traded to the Nippon Ham Fighters for Toshio Kato in 1982, and he went 3-for-32 that season. Iwai hit .260/.274/.423 in 1983, and he became the starting shortstop in 1984 after Nobuhiro Takashiro was injured. Iwai played 125 games with a .286/.326/.385 batting line that season, and he hit .221/.284/.414 in 95 games in 1985 as a second baseman after Takashiro returned. He lost his spot after Kazuyuki Shirai shined in 1986, and he was 6-for-44 in 41 games. He batted .286/.313/.364 in 1987, and he announced his retirement after he went 2-for-19 in 1988. Iwai became the fielding coach for the Whales from 1997 to 1999 and for their minors team from 1991 to 1996. He scouted for the Whales from 2000 to 2003, and he was the fielding coach for the Fighters minor league team in 2017. Iwai also scouted for the Fighters, signing Takuya Nakashima, Kensuke Kondo and Seiichi Uchikawa.

Overall, Iwai hit .247/.293/.361 with 235 hits and 23 homers in 13 seasons in NPB.
