Biographical Information[edit]
Sven Huhnholz played in the Bundesliga and for the German national team.
He hit .333/.429/.556 in the 1993 European Championship with 8 runs in 7 games, leading the team in runs (3 ahead of Stefan Hagenah). [1] The first Bundesliga season for which online stats are available (as of 4/27/2026) was 1994, when he batted .329/.462/.447 for the Berlin Sluggers; he tied for second in the Bundesliga-1 North in RBI (30), tied for 5th in walks (20) and tied for 4th in steals (17). [2] He again led Germany in runs at the 1995 European Championship with 10 in 7 games, two ahead of Martin Helmig; his batting line was .409/.552/.591 as he led their regulars in average (.009 ahead of Matthias Winterrath). He was 10th in the 1995 Euros in OBP (between Johnny Balentina and Eddy Dix) and his four swipes tied for 9th with Raul Perez, Manuel Martinez, Alexander Nizov, Roger de Saedeleer and Jani Malovic. During the 1996 season, he produced at a .476/.538/.780 clip for the Berlin Banshees. He was among the Bundesliga-1 north leaders in homers (3, tied for 6th), hits (39, 3rd, leading German natives), triples (4, tied for 1st), runs (37, 2nd), slugging (4th), OBP (3rd), OPS (4th), steals (14, tied for 8th) and assists (62, 4th). [4] In 1997, he moved to the Paderborn Untouchables and hit .398/.495/.591 with 38 runs in 28 games. He was 6th in RBI (26), tied for 4th in hits (37), 3rd with 38 runs (between Volker Kuhlmann and Stefan Pößl), 10th in slugging, 8th in OPS (between Marc Marsch and Georg Bull) and 8th in steals (14). [5]
In his final stint with the national team, he hit .273/.333/.364 with 5 RBI in 6 games in the 1997 European Championship, trailing only Marsch in RBI for Germany. [6] He did not play in the Bundesliga-1 in 1998. In '99, the 30-year-old was 9 for 14 with two walks, two doubles, two homers, five runs and six RBI for the Strausberg Sun Warriors. [7] The next year, he struggled with the HSV Stealers, batting .190/.354/.333 and tying for the lead with 29 K; he tied for 9th with 17 walks. [8] In 2001, he slumped further to .170/.291/.213 while the league went to wood bats. [9]
Huhnholz starred for HSV in the minors in 2002 at .453/.538/.756. In the Bundesliga-2 North, he was third in average, tied for 8th in homers (4), 5th in RBI (41), second in slugging and sixth in OBP. [10] In 2003, he returned to the top German level but eked out a .204/.279/.259 line then hit .265/.359/.353 in limited time in 2005 to wrap up his career in the Bundesliga-1. [11] He worked for the German Baseball Academy from 2003-2026. [12] He also coauthored a German book on baseball with Bull. [13] Additionally, he coached for Germany in the 2018 U15 Baseball World Cup. [14]
