Biographical Information[edit]

Steve Decker was drafted in the 21st round of the 1988 amateur draft out of Lewis-Clark State College. Much of the initial scout attention paid to Decker was actually due to his teammate, and fellow battery mate, Stephen Callahan who was twice himself drafted (in 1988 and 1989), and despite having posted three consecutive minor league seasons with an ERA in the low 2.00's, and never over 3.53 in his minor league career, never made the big leagues. Decker played in the majors leagues from 1990-1999, though part of that time was spent in the high minor leagues. He completed his playing career with the Sacramento River Cats in 2000.

After retiring as a player, Decker moved immediately into coaching with the San Francisco Giants organization. Decker was a hitting coach for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes in 2001-2002 and the Fresno Grizzlies in 2003-2004. In 2005 the Giants promoted him to manager and he returned to the Volcanoes for the 2005-2007 seasons. Decker became skipper of the San Jose Giants in 2008 and led them to the best overall record in the California League, even though they missed the playoffs. He moved to the east coast in 2009 as manager of the Connecticut Defenders before returning to the left coast in 2010-2011 as skipper in Fresno.

Decker worked as the Giants Minor League Hitting Coordinator in 2012-2013. He title changed to Coordinator of Minor League Instruction and Hitting in 2014 and he remained in that position through April 30, 2015. At that time, the Giants promoted Decker to assistant hitting coach of the major league staff to replace Joe Lefebvre who wanted to move back to a professional scouting role. Decker remained an assistant hitting coach through the 2017 season. He was a Special Assistant in Baseball Operations in 2018. Decker became a professional scout for the Giants in either 2019 or 2020 and served in that capacity through 2023.
