Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Stacey Pettis played in the minor leagues from 1981 to 1987, peaking at Single-A. He spent 1983 to 1987 entirely at that level.
He was taken by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 4th round of the 1981 amateur draft, one pick ahead of pitcher Curt Young and two picks ahead of future All-Star Paul O'Neill. Though he was a low-average hitter -- he peaked at .258 -- he had good speed. From 1981 to 1986, he stole 21, 15, 35, 23, 44 and 28 bases each year, respectively. In 1984, he was second in the Carolina League in times caught stealing with 16, behind George Crum's 20. In 1985, he led the California League with 143 strikeouts.
Overall, he batted .233/.314/.321 with 18 home runs, 159 RBI and 167 stolen bases in 467 games over 7 seasons.
He later became a scout, working for the Seattle Mariners and St. Louis Cardinals. He signed Jordan Pries, Justin Souza and Taylor Stanton. His brother, Gary Pettis, spent more than a decade in the majors and later became a coach.
