Vanguard was known as Southern California College until attaining University status in 1999. Southern California College was the first NCAA school to use a female pitcher in a college game when Ila Borders took the hill for them in 1994. Jodi Haller made two appearances for NAIA Saint Vincent College in 1990.

Southern California College fired its coach near the end of the 1987 season. Rather than hiring an interim coach, the team chose redshirt pitcher Mark Deushane to coach the team the rest of the way. The team then won the District 3 tournment and finished 3rd in the Area tournament.
