Biographical Information[edit]

Shiro Fujise played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 7 years.

Fujise signed with the Kintetsu Buffaloes in 1976, and he was used as pinch-runner in his entire career. He went 3-for-15 with 10 steals in 1977, and he was 0-for-22 with 20 steals in 1978. Fujise ranked 6th in steals that season, between Sumio Hirota and Makoto Shimada. He then had a 5-for-28 record with 27 steals in 1979, and he was 4th in steals (between Koji Minoda and Masaru Tomita). He broke the NPB record for most steals as a pinch-runner with 25. In the 1979 Nippon Series, Fujise was the pinch-runner for Koichi Hada in the 9th inning of Game 7, and he stole second soon. However, he was tagged out after Shigeru Ishiwata failed to bunt, and the Buffaloes lost to the Hiroshima Toyo Carp in 7 games.

The Osaka native hit .241/.299/.398 with 22 steals in 108 at-bats in 1980, and he was 6th in steals (between Michiyo Arito and Mitsuru Fujiwara). Fujise then went 7-for-52 with 15 steals in 1981, and he collected 15 steals with a 2-for-16 record in 1982. Fujise went 2-for-4 with 8 steals in 1983, and he announced his retirement. He stole 105 bases as a pinch-runner in his career, and it was the NPB record until Takahiro Suzuki broke it in 2014.

Overall, Fujise hit .206/.264/.298 with 45 hits and 117 steals in 7 seasons in NPB.
