Biographical Information[edit]
Shigenobu Sumiyoshi signed with the Hankyu Braves in 1962, and he only got 5 at-bats in his first two seasons. On August 22, 1964 Sumiyoshi committed catcher's interference when Susumu Iwamoto was batting, and it was the first NPB game to end on a catcher's interference call. It would be 42 years later before another game ended due to catcher's interference (Yoshiyuki Ishihara in 2006). Sumiyoshi was 3-for-13 that season, and he went 3-for-13 again in 1965. He only got 9 more at-bats for the big club, and he announced his retirement in 1970.
