Biographical Information[edit]
Seth Etherton was drafted out of high school and after his junior year at the University of Southern California, but did not sign. In 1998, the Anaheim Angels drafted him in the first round and Etherton made his major league debut with the Angels in 2000. Etherton spent parts of four seasons in the major leagues. He also played in South Korea, Mexico, Taiwan, and Venezuela. Etherton finished his playing career during the 2012/2013 Venezuelan League season with the Tigres de Aragua.
Etherton became a pitching coach for the University of San Francisco in 2014-2015. He returned to the Cincinnati Reds organization and worked as a pitching coach for the Billings Mustangs in 2016-2017 and Dayton Dragons in 2018-2019. Etherton was scheduled to be the Chattanooga Lookouts pitching coach in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19. He was the pitching coach of the Louisville Bats in 2021 and stayed there until his departure in July, 2022. In 2021, Etherton oversaw a Bats pitching staff which set club records for most strikeouts, lowest opposing batting average and best strikeout-to-walk, hits-per-nine-innings and strikeouts-per-nine innings ratios, and tied the franchise record for the best single-season WHIP.[1]
Etherton left the Reds to return to his alma mater as an assistant coach. He was the Trojans pitching coach for the 2023 and 2024 seasons. The Trojans won the Pac-12 ERA crown as a team in Etherton's first season, finishing No. 25 in the nation with a 4.39 ERA. Etherton and USC had a mutual parting of the ways after the 2024 season.[2]
In 2025, Etherton joined USA Baseball as a pitching coach for the 16U/17U team in their National Team Development Program.[3]
