Biographical Information

Seiya Hosokawa has played in the Nippon Pro Baseball.

Hosokawa was drafted by the Yokohama DeNA BayStars in the fifth round of the 2016 NPB draft, and he hit .201/.275/.325 with 10 homers in the NPB Farm Leagues in his rookie year. The 19-year-old outfielder was promoted on October 3, and he blasted a solo shot off Shotaro Kasahara in his first career at-bat. Hosokawa extended his solid batting, and crushed another homer off Takuma Achira the next day. He was the only player who recorded a homer in both of his first two games the season after he graduated from high school. He was 1-for-3 in the 2017 PLCS and became the second high school-drafted player to have one postseason hit and RBI in his rookie year. (The other one is Tetsuto Yamada). In the 2017 Nippon Series, he was 3-for-7 with 2 walks, but the BayStars were beaten by the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks in 6 games.

After his stunning rookie year, Hosokawa struggled in 2018, only hitting .231/.326/.364 with 8 homers on the farm. He was 4-for-18 with the big club. The Kanagawa native improved to .293/.367/.537 with 15 homers in ni-gun in 2018, but still only went 16-for-72 in the major league. He was third in the Eastern League in dingers, behind Hisanori Yasuda and Yasutaka Shiomi. Hosokawa led the Eastern League in homers, RBI and OBP in 2020 as he hit .318/.448/.547 with 13 homers, but he still struggled in the Central League and recorded a .235/.278/.333 batting line after being promoted in July. Hosokawa repeated his failure in 2021, as he only batted .154/.250/.179 even though his batting line was solid .280/.382/.586 in ni-gun. He was 1-for-19 in 2022, then the Chunichi Dragons drafted him in the 2022 NPB Active draft.

Hosokawa finally broke out after changing teams. He hit .253/.326/.454 with 24 homers and 73 RBI, ranking 4th in homers (tied with Teruaki Sato), 7th in walks (49, between Sato and Shogo Sakakura) and 5th in RBI (tied with Yusuke Ohyama). He was also selected into the 2023 NPB All-Star Game, but he went 0-for-4 with 2 Ks. He extended his solid performance in 2024, and he was selected into the 2024 NPB All-Star Game. Hosokawa was 1-for-5, with a RBI double against Sachiya Yamasaki, in Game 1, then he was 1-for-3 in Game 2. He ended up hitting .292/.368/.478 with 23 homers, and he won his first Best Nine award. Hosokawa also ranked 4th in hits (156, between Shogo Akiyama and Naoki Yoshikawa), 5th in doubles (30, between Shugo Maki and Domingo Santana), 4th in homers (tied with Maki), 10th in RBI (67, between Ohyama and Keita Sano) and 4th in batting (between Maki and Akiyama).
