Biographical Information[edit]

Seiichi Sato pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 7 years.

Sato was drafted by the Nippon Ham Fighters in the second round of the 1982 NPB draft, but he only pitched one game for the big club in his first two seasons. He had a 5.26 ERA in 14 games in 1985, then he went 4-4 with a 3.42 ERA in 1986. Sato had a 9-12 record with a 3.51 ERA in 1987, and he was 2nd in losses in the Pacific League (tied with Hideyuki Awano and Nobuyuki Hoshino). He was 8-10 with a 3.45 ERA in 1988, and the Fighters named him their closer in 1989. Sato notched 18 saves with a 6-11 record and a 3.71 ERA in 47 appearances that season, and he was 3rd in saves (between Masato Yoshii and Yoshihiro Yamauchi), 3rd in appearances (tied with Hideaki Sato and Yoshii) and 6th in losses (tied with Hisanobu Watanabe and Hiroshi Tsuno). He was also selected into the 1989 NPB All-Star Game, and he relieved Hoshino in the 8th inning in Game 2. However, he allowed game-winning 2-run single to Kenichi Yamazaki, and Hiroshi Nagatomi got the win over him. Sato was 1-3 with a 5.94 ERA in 1990, and he never reached the big club again before he announced his retirement in 1994.

Overall, Sato was 28-41 with 19 saves and a 4.06 ERA , struck out 388 and pitched 558 innings in 7 seasons in NPB.
