A Chicago native, Esposito attended Fenger High School and then Indiana University, where he played basketball. He signed with the White Sox on August 29, 1952 and appeared in his first big league game a month later. After missing part of the 1953 season and all of 1954 due to military service, he spent most of 1955 with the Memphis Chicks before returning to the Sox late in the year. He was with the Go-Go Sox in the 1959 World Series.
Following his big league career, Esposito was a longtime baseball coach (1967-1987) and basketball assistant coach at North Carolina State University. He took NC State to the 1968 College World Series, their first appearance in that event. Among those he coached at NC State were future major league mainstays Dan Plesac, Mike Caldwell, Tim Stoddard and Greg Briley.
