Biographical Information

Ryutaro Sugiura played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 5 years.

Sugiura signed with the Hiroshima Carp in 1951, and he was named their opening day starter because Ryohei Hasegawa was injured. He completed the game against the Hanshin Tigers, and he was the first Central League rookie to complete a game on opening day. Sugiura ended up 6-14 with a 3.84 ERA in his rookie year, and he was 6th in losses (tied with Hasegawa) and 10th in complete games (14, tied with Tsuneo Kobayashi). He improved to 9-12 with a 2.54 ERA in 1952, and he was 9th in ERA (between Nobuo Oshima and Masaichi Kaneda). Sugiura slumped to 2-7 with a 4.38 ERA in 1953, and he struggled again in 1954 as his ERA was 5.18 in 13 games. He went to the Taiyo Whales in 1955, but he allowed 6 runs in 4 innings and he announced his retirement.

Overall, Sugiura was 17-36 with a 3.78 ERA, struck out 108 and pitched 554 1/3 innings in 5 seasons in NPB.
