Biographical Information[edit]

Ryosuke Tatsumi has played in Nippon Pro Baseball.

Tatsumi represented Japan in the 2017 Universiade and the 2018 Haarlem Baseball Week. He won the Homerun King and Jacques Reuvers Award in the latter event. The Hanshin Tigers, Yomiuri Giants, SoftBank Hawks and Rakuten Golden Eagles all drafted Tatsumi in the first round of the 2018 NPB draft, and the Eagles won the lottery for his rights; the scout was Hisashi Aikyo. [1] Tatsumi debuted on March 30, 2019, and collected his first career hit off Yuki Ariyoshi on the next day.[2] Tatsumi secured the everyday outfielder spot as a rookie, and batted .229/.320/.318 with 13 steals in this season.

The Kobe native hit .223/.286/.378 with 8 dingers and 11 steals in 2020. In 2021, Tatsumi blasted a homer off Naoyuki Uwasawa on the first ball of the opening game, becoming the fifth player in NPB history to did so. He recorded a .225/.326/.345 batting line, and won a Gold Glove award as an outfielder. He became the first player in team history to hit two home runs in a inning on June 12, 2022 against the Yomiuri Giants. Tatsumi ended up batting .271/.354/.401 with career-high 11 homers in this season. He also won the Gold Glove award again. Tatsumi played 133 games with a .263/.341/.385 batting line in 2023, and he was 2nd in the Pacific League in triples (5, tied with Tsuyoshi Yamasaki and Keita Nakagawa) and 8th in steals (13, tied with Yamasaki and Yuya Ogoh).

Tatsumi had his career year to that point in 2024, and he hit .294/.353/.419 with 12 triples and 7 homers, stealing 20 bases in 22 tries. He was selected into the 2024 NPB All-Star Game, and he hit a single against Ryoji Kuribayashi in Game 1. He was the PL's starting center fielder in Game 2, and he crushed a solo shot against Kojiro Yoshimura in his first at-bat. Tatsumi then drew two straight walks, and he hit a RBI single against Hiroto Takahashi in the 6th inning. He added a single against Raidel Martinez in the 9th inning, and he won the fighting spirit award as MVP of the losing team. He won his 4th straight Gold Glove, and he was named to the Best Nine team for the first time in his career. He led the league in hits (158) and triples, and he was 2nd in runs (68, 6 behind Ryoya Kurihara) and 4th in steals (tied with Go Matsumoto). Tatsumi set the NPB record as he recorded 397 putouts in a season as an outfielder.

After his elite season, Tatsumi made it onto Japan's roster for the 2024 Premier 12. He was 0-for-3 with a RBI against Australia in their opener, and he was 0-for-4 versus South Korea. Tatsumi then had a 1-for-5 record (with a double against Po-Ching Chen) facing Chinese Taipei. He was 1-for-3 against Cuba, but he was plunked by fellow PL player Livan Moinelo on his elbow, so he missed the next game. In the super round against Venezuela, Tatsumi was 3-for-4, with a RBI double against Ricardo Pinto to help Japan win that clutch game. He was 2-for-5 versus the USA, and he hit a 2-run double against Chih-Hsuan Wang of Taiwan. Before the Gold Medal Game versus Taiwan again, Tatsumi announced that he would become a pitcher if they lost. He went 1-for-3 with a single against Kai-Wei Lin, but Japan lost and their 27-game winning streak ended. [3]

Tatsumi struggled in 2025, and his batting line fell to .240/.325/.341 in 114 games, stealing 20 bases without being caught. He was 7th in steals (tied with Akito Takabe), and he won his 5th consecutive Gold Gloves.
