Biographical Information[edit]
Milford Ross Swartz was a pitcher in the minor leagues who played for the Gettysburg Patriots, Reading Coal Barons, Reading Marines, Reading Aces, Pittsfield Hillies, and Newark Bears. He was born on June 18, 1893, in North Middleton Township, Pennsylvania[1] and died on October 22, 1978, in Brunswick County, North Carolina[2]. He is sometimes referred to as Ross M. Swartz in unofficial documentation, but always used Milford Ross Swartz on official documents.
In March 1921, Swartz was living in Storrs and serving as physical director at Connecticut State Agricultural College when he signed with Reading Aces. A newspaper account described him as a speedy right-hander and noted that he had been with the Reading Marines the previous season[3]. He coached baseball at Connecticut State Agricultural College in 1921[3]. Most of his career was spent in the International League, one step shy of the majors.
During World War I, Swartz served as a lieutenant and saw action in the Meuse-Argonne offensive[4].
