Ronald Reagan was the 40th President of the United States, serving from 1981 to 1989. As a young man, he was a Chicago Cubs radio broadcaster and later went on to a successful career as a Hollywood actor. Among his roles was his portrayal of Grover Cleveland Alexander in the 1952 movie The Winning Team. He broadcast Cubs games for WHO Radio in Des Moines, IA, re-creating some road games from a ticker-tape description.
As Governor of California in 1968, he threw the ceremonial first pitch at the first home game in the history of the Oakland Athletics. As President, he took a deep interest in the resolution of the 1981 strike, appointing federal mediator Ken Moffett to assist in breaking the impasse between the two sides and work out a framework agreement that saved the season.
