Player of the Month Award
The Major League Baseball Player of the Month Award is an official award of Major League Baseball that distinguishes the best position player in the American League and National League at the end of each month. The award is given out after a vote of sportswriters, based only on performance from the first to the last day of that month. The award is sponsored by Budweiser and is officially titled the "Budweiser Presents American League Player of the Month" and the "Budweiser Presents National League Player of the Month".
The award was originally created by National League President Warren Giles in May of 1958; the American League only followed suit at the start of the 1974 season. The award was originally for all players; in 1975, the NL began awarding a separate Pitcher of the Month Award for pitchers, and the AL began doing so in 1979.
