Biographical Information[edit]
Pedro Astacio was nicknamed "La Mula" (The Mule). He took the ball on Opening Day for the Colorado Rockies in 2000, allowing just 2 runs on 6 hits in 7 1/3 innings at Turner Field, a 2-0 loser to the Atlanta Braves. His 749 strikeouts with the Rockies from 1997-2001 were the franchise best until Ubaldo Jimenez passed him in 2011.
Astacio re-joined the Rockies organization in 2019 as a pitching coach of the DSL Rockies 1. A 2025 report indicated he was a Special Pitching Coach for the Rockies DSL teams in 2020-2021, though this could not be confirmed by contemporary sources.[1] Astacio was definitely a Special Pitching Coach with DSL Colorado in 2022-2023 and DSL Rockies in 2024. He continued in that position in 2025, although his team affiliation is unknown.
Pedro's cousin, Hector Astacio, pitched in the minor league chain of the Los Angeles Angels in 2001-2004 and was featured in Matt McCarthy's 2009 memoir Odd Man Out: A Year on the Mound With a Minor League Misfit.
